With many spending more time at home due to COVID, the consumption of natural resources and food waste has grown in households across the country, and quite possibly around the world. Although conservation and caring for the environment may not be the first thing on the minds of people, it should be placed on our priority list. Furthermore, we should encourage others to do the same, too, but the topic of conversation and caring for the planet can be a touchy subject for some. So, what can we do to get people to care for the environment? Below are a few things you can do to help others start the process.
One of the first things you can do is provide those you seek to help with educational resources about the environment. Aid others in understanding that they are part of the vast diverse circle of life on Earth so they can feel more connected to nature. When humans feel connected to something they truly care for, they are more likely to act and prevent others from harming what they love.
Take the time to listen to the perspectives of others and understand the different ways they interact with the planet. Many times when people are heard, they are more likely to be open to hearing views that are different from their
own. Take the opportunity to share your experience as well. Your stories may incite a new, fruitful discussion.
Lastly, let go of expectations. Remember that change is a slow process for many and learning about something new takes time. Introduce environmental topics slowly and allow people to learn at their own pace. This will help shift perspectives without making people feel forced to change.
